2. Title: Enhancing human mobility using robotic exoskeletons for real-world locomotion


  Abstract: Persons with lower limb disabilities experience significantly limited mobility due to neurological damage or advanced age. Wearable assistive devices, such as robotic exoskeletons, have the potential to transform human mobility by restoring motor functions for these individuals and thereby providing independence. While significant improvements in the past decade indicated the viability of using the technology, we are still far from seeing people using exoskeletons in daily activities. Primarily, control approaches optimized in a laboratory setting do not fully represent the task and environment that a person experiences in the real world. Dominant control frameworks used in the field, based on aggregated information from healthy individuals, greatly limits the ability of the technology to translate to clinical populations. Furthermore, existing control frameworks cannot map human motor learning into robotic control because they are developed without a detailed understanding of the device’s effect on human neuromuscular control. My research program tackles these challenges by 1) optimizing exoskeleton designs, 2) developing learning-based control framework, and 3) evaluating biomechanical outcomes in both healthy and clinical populations.
